GuthrieMary Elizabeth (Britton) Guthrie

Born in Rochester, NY, Mary died in her Mt. Prospect home on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 94. Daughter of Hervey and Alice (Fry) Britton, Mary was the youngest of five children. Preceded in death by husband, Charles, and daughter, Cynthia, Mary is survived by son-in-law, Rev. Charles Hoffacker, and grand-daughter, Sophia, both of MD.

Always proud of her heritage, Mary would share that she was the direct descendent of pilgrims who arrived from London in 1637 on the ship ‘Increase’ and the granddaughter of Willis Britton of Greece, New York. Along with two masters degrees and the near completion of a doctorate (started at 70), Mary had an illustrious career in education which spanned 45 years (in Rochester and Brighton, NY, Waukesha, WI, Northbrook Dist. 27 and Harper Jr. College in IL). Mary was a 49-year active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society of teachers, and attended South Church in Mt. Prospect.

Visitation will be from 2 pm until services at 7 pm on Wednesday, October 28th, 2015, Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Rd. – at NW Hwy, Mt. Prospect, IL (847-255-7800). Interment TBA after the first of the year in Brookfield, WI.
